The Room Theatre – Theatre Laboratory
Stage & Screen Arts & The Orian Method – The
The Room Theatre – Theatre Laboratory was established in Tel-Aviv in 1985, in order to research, study and perform, an alternative to performer’s behavior in the environment of the artistic event. This is a unique phenomenon in the performing arts in Israel. The artistic director is Amir Orian, playwright, actor, director and theatre critic, the creator of the Orian Method – The Open Circle. This is a complete artistic system. The purpose of it is to enlarge the range of the artistic perception and reaction. The main idea of “The Orian Method – The Open Circle” is: The continuance movement between History and the Immediate and Authentic Personal Experience creates the desired artistic (and Existential) Harmony. The method is a search into the relationship between Personal Artistic History, and the Immediate Experience of the performer. The first show of the Room theatre was “The Dinner” (“Aruhat Ha’erev”), which opened in Tel-Aviv in December 1, 1985. The show deals with the relationship between Men, Society and God. “The Dinner” provoked various reactions and was regarded by audience and theatre professionals as a controversial but brilliant and enlightening event. In addition to shows, for professional actors, for artists in the performing arts, and open discussion meetings for various artists. The Room Theatre does not operate only in its original room. Shortly after “The Dinner” started running, The Room Theatre held a one-time large-scale public performance, on the beach in Tel-Aviv. The show named “The little mermaid and her flight to heaven in the arms of kitsch” included thirty performers. This was a sarcastic, entertaining event, based on the very well known fairy tale. Some of the domestic shows were performed outside their original home, but only if the alternative space could answer the show’s special demands, or if the show could answer the special characteristics of the space. This describes one of the method principles: It’s recommended that The “Fictional Place” of the text will meet and agree with the “Physical Place” of the show. The Room Theatre considers every performance, also as a “Demonstration show”. It means that every performance in The Room Theatre is actually also a demonstration of “The Orian Method – The Open Circle”. Those performances clearly demonstrate the principles of the theory. 2009 – A special prize for life achievement was given to Amir Orian Performances: “The Dinner” (“Aruhat Ha’erev”) Conceived & directed by A. “The little mermaid and her flight to heaven in the arms of kitsch” Directed by A.
